Breaking Old Traditions!
Breaking Old Traditions!
Many of us can remember being awakened on Sunday Morning by Mom to get up for Sunday School. We would moan and groan about getting up early. We would begrudgingly get ready, eat breakfast as a family (remember when we ate breakfast in the mornings together) grab our children’s Bible and head out with our parents to Sunday School. After we got there, all was forgotten about waking up early, as we got into the lesson whether it was a skit or lively discussion on the topic of the day. We would ask questions, laugh at some responses and the next thing you knew, Sunday School was over. We would trot off to the choir, or sit by our parents in the congregation with excitement, because we got energized in Sunday School.
What we didn’t know at the time was how much we were learning, building our faith and lifelong relationships. On the surface, we felt like Mom and Dad were making us do something we didn’t want to do. But they were they were giving us something we would need in life. They were training us for our future. Proverbs 22:6 tells us, “to train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” They knew that we would face life’s challenging situations, and need to have a source of faith and hope on which to draw. As we were studying those Sunday School lessons, we inadvertently built spiritual muscles and faith in God, to sustain us through life.
What we later realized, as we were asking questions breaking down the lesson, we were actually getting instructions for life, and the Word of God was being planted in our hearts (II Timothy 2:15). We eventually found that we would go back to those familiar Sunday School lessons for answers to today’s situations. We could lean on the strength and knowledge to carry us through life’s most difficult challenges. All of sudden, we were grateful to mom and dad for waking us up to go to Sunday School. That we actually didn’t lose -- we gained faith, hope, integrity and character.
Now as I bring my granddaughter - through her whining about wanting to sleep in - to Sunday School at Valley Kingdom Ministries- I know that she is being given the best gift I can give her for life – spiritual muscles and faith in God, to sustain her through life. The classes are fun and exciting and without her realizing it she eagerly tells me about what she learned in class. I laugh under my breath every time. She doesn’t remember she was complaining about coming. Sunday School is one of those “Old traditions” that’s still a good thing. We all want to make sure our children are prepared for life in their spirit and soul. From participating in Bible Quiz Team competitions to enjoying fellowship with other students, what better way than to bring them to Sunday School to build their faith and their spiritual muscles.
Do you bring your children to Sunday School? By the way, it’s a good place for the adults too! Join us on Sunday’s at Rhema Word 2.0 – Valley Kingdom Ministries, Inc. where we are making an old tradition new again! Liz Hope, Rhema Word 2.0 (Sunday School) - Supt. - Valley Kingdom Ministries, Intl.
